The Division of Pulmonary Medicine provides full pulmonary service throughout the Staten Island University
Hospital System. Services are provided to all adult patients and to children 12 years of age and older at the
request of an attending physician or the Division of
Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine.
The Physician Staff of the Pulmonary division continuously supervise the function of the Respiratory Services
division. The Respiratory Services division provides mechanical ventilatory expertise throughout the institution.
All mechanical ventilators are managed by a member of the Pulmonary division and actually maintained by a member
of the Respiratory Services division.
The Division of Respiratory Services initiates and routinely checks the accuracy and adequacy of all oxygen orders
and initiates and checks the adequacy and accuracy of inhalational medication orders throughout the institution.
The Division of Pulmonary Medicine offers pulmonary consultations throughout the institution on a 24-hour / 7-day-
per-week schedule. All pulmonary consultations are performed by board-certified pulmonary specialists. In addition,
pulmonary/critical care consultations are also available 7-days-per-week, 24-hours-per-day by board-certified
Pulmonary/Critical Care specialists. Patients are seen with diagnoses commonly including community and nosocomial
pneumonia, bronchogenic carcinoma, lung cancer, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, adult respiratory
distress syndrome and respiratory failure. Services are available for inhalational burns at Staten Island University
Hospital’s Regional Burn Center.
The Division of Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine oversees the functioning of all
Intensive Care Units in the institution (ICU North, ICU South, CCU North,
CCU South,Cardiothoracic ICU North). The Pulmonary division also oversees the direction of the 14-bed Chronic
Ventilatory Unit.
Cardiopulmonary exercise tests, breath-by-breath metabolic analysis, and full pulmonary function testing are available
at the North site.
The Institute of Sleep Medicine is directed by the Pulmonary division and
housed in the South site campus. The center is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Full
polysomnographic and multiple sleep latency testing are available seven days and nights per week.
Respiratory therapists are certified by the State of New York and maintain competency by continuous education programs
and evaluations. Extensive Performance Improvement programs are in place to monitor and improve the quality of care throughout the division.
